Topic:  Learn coding at a demo party?
* Posted by Tomcat_ Friday 20 August 2004 - 10:22
A friend invited me to join him at the TUM Party in Germany in late December.

Now, the demoscene is nothing new for me (started watching demos in the early 1990s), but I've never coded a demo or been at a scene party. But I have been programming 'regular things' in several languages for 10 years now.

Do you think it's a bad idea to try and start learning how to program a demo at a demo party? Or is it exactly the right place? Will I even have time?

Because I might take my laptop with me and just hack away... I just want to know how sceners would see that...

This posting might sound a bit odd, but I just want to know if I should go there because of the party effect, or if I might start coding demos/intros myself... tell me what you think. :)

well, its a good place to clear some doubts and learn some tricks. but not for learning everything from scratch, i woudl try to get something done before if i was you and then ask some ppl why is it so slow or something like that. socializing is more profitable at a demoparty imho. :)

Learning to code at a demoparty? Hm... It's 3 days so you don't have that much time - especially if you're interested in the programmes as well. And of course, I'm not sure other people would like to sit there with you all the time for those 3 days trying to explain what's bilinear filtering :D
I suggest you to try to learn coding before the party and just discuss details by a beer with people when you arrive there. It's much more fun that way. Of course nothing holds you back if you want to partycode some release, but in most cases you have to have some foundation for that, learning the basics at the partyplace is kinda a waste of time... I mean, the party lasts only for 3 days, you have to use that time to do things you're not able to do otherwise - namely meet people from different countries and such.
So basically just try to learn as much as possible before the party :D

Okay, then I'll drop the idea. :)

I just hope I won't get bored... I mean I have no idea how much is going on at a demo party. I have only been to a few LAN parties so far, and when I wasn't gaming or sleeping, it was pretty boring.

So since gaming is being frowned upon on scene parties and coding is out of the question, I hope there'll be enough other things to do. :)

I guess it depends on the party organization...

The best thing to do is: go to the party and see for yourself what's going on there. Just bring your laptop and your coding tools. You probably won't have time to code something decent, but you can start.

And unlike LAN-parties, demoparties are a lot more fun. It's the time and the place to have a real life conversation with other sceners, to have a beer (or a soda, whatever), ... It's a social event.
