| | am i the only one wondering wtf is "significant deformation near the cranium" doing on best effects nominees instead of dreamchild or pornonoise? | | |
| Mhmm, well, yes, I for one think that the nominees in most categories could be much more balanced than they actually are. Instead of having kewlers demos all over the place, maybe one demo per group/individual should be enough to leave some room for other groups too. Either that or extend the number of nominees. My favourite 2003 demo (ninja in a box) is missing and having legomania NOT in the "best directed" category seems odd too.
Also, I'm not satisfied with the platform mixup. A vic20 prod in the 4k category? I suppose we need more categories, at least a separation of the wild/odd platforms/pc stuff.
| | that would result in some 30 awards to be given away. everybody would be out boozing instead of watching that. | | |
| | Two additional awards ("best oldschool hardware/strange platform/non-pc production" and "best animation") should be no big deal. | | |
| animations, when is something a demoscene-oriented anim, and why isn't finding nemo one?
strange platform - right now there's simply a "the best" thing for all platforms. why give alt platform prods a bigger chance for an award than pc prods, just because there happen to be fewer of them? i really can't see the problem with a vic20 prod in the 4k category, actually.
imo, categories are fine this way. the lack of ninja in a box (best graphics? best direction? anyone?) is a serious thing, agreed.
| | I see the point of the all-platform approach, but nonetheless it's still a faulty one. It's like comparing apples to oranges. A 4k on vc20 is almost half a demo considering the specs of this machine. Also, IF you do it this way, you have to do it consequently. So where are all the the c64 (loaded?), amiga (fake elektronik lightshow? magia? fate fits karma?), gba (phloam?) etc. demos in the "best demo" category? So, to conclude this rant, I still think that there are some things left to improve for future scene.org awards. :) | | |
| Tomaes, as you guessed - it's all up to resources we have and how many different categories we can host. Keeping the categories open for every platform isn't perhaps fair for oldskool demos, but then again it's not a restraint to be a nominee either.
Last year we had Planet Potion winning the best intro award and Little Nell got 3 nominations, both on Amiga. Now we have the GBA demos from Unique and Matt Current, Robotic Warrior (VIC-20), and couple of great console entries (Doomsday and Aura for Laura) competing.
The basic problem with having more platforms is that what if we add one for oldskool (lets say 8-bit computers), is that really enough? Soon people would also require a separate category for mobile demos, console demos or just about any non-PC demos.
I'm not saying this is totally out of question. The latest two categories (4k and public's choice) were partially chosen by the feedback we got after last years Awards. If there's enough demand for an oldskool category, perhaps we'll see one at the Scene.org Awards 2004. No promises, though. :)
| | ps, i understand if you dislike "a significant deformation near the cranium", but *Dreamchild*? You must be kidding. | | |
| alas i am not.
it did have some nice effects imho.
the plasma/smoke thing in the begining and the tunnel..
| | ps, i must say that i was surprised too to see asdntc in the effects-category. I'd prefer protozoa being nominated instead. But don't blame kewlers, blame the jury :) | | |
