Topic:  Looking for Demo Group
* Posted by Jaleho Monday 13 June 2005 - 16:55
Greetings. I am a graphic artist / programmer who has been working with actionscript, javascript, DarkBASIC and some simple cgi/perl. I have just recently started learning C++, and would like to learn more about it. Since my interest in C++ is to visualize algorhythms, l-systems and procedural methods, I thought creating demos would be a good direction to go in.

However, I seem to be kind of lost - C++ is so massive, and I don't know what direction to go in. Overall, it has the feel of actionscript, so it hasn't been too hard to learn the basics. But So much of the visual side (apaprt from printing text in dos) involves lots of advanced external libraries.

I'd like to start making demos, and would like some advice/mentroship in what direction to start. I'd rather have a concrete goal to head towards (pan around a 3d still life while playing a simple tune) than memorize a list of commands (Hello world) - making the learning applicable... can ya tell I write curriculum? :)

Are there any groups (USA or otherwise) that would be willing to take a fledgling programmer under their wing? I don't eat much and I already know the basics of OOP and classes :)

Also, if a group feels it would be better for me to start in ASM, I'll go that route, too.

I am also a music composer and a cartoonist, and I have been learning how to do pure vector images, if any of that would be useful.

its 2005. only insane retro coders use asm :)

try setting up some basic engine kernel. maybe reading opengl's redbook and checking stravaganza and neusnauk's recently released sourcecode to their engines.

code couple new effects, (reuse engines, not effects), check what other groups around your area/interest are doing. idle in some forums. get to know the groups, you're bound to find some friendly sceners in some of them. if not, create your own and use the forums to get help on implementation problems, and they'll come to you instead of you needing to come to them.

but to answer directly to your question, s_tec and thom seemed to be getting serious into demomaking and needing some new members for their group, you might wanna get in touch with them. if everything else fails, atleast you'll know some active US sceners. :)

http://www.scenespot.org/ is the best forum to reach the US scene. it's abit dead, but then again so is the US scene, so help it get more active. :)

also try the first couple of lessons on http://nehe.gamedev.net/ - those tutorials aren't even really that good and the code shown is just terrible, but still it's a good start.

http://www.andypike.com/tutorials/DirectX8/ is rather nice too (though, well, DX8, a bit dated).

both are really about game programming, but they start out with the graphics part and include full working code samples (projects) that you can just modify to see if you can make your own ideas happen.
