 | | Topic: | Syntax Demoparty 2010 - Let's try again | | | Hey guys,
Thought I would start a new thread to talk about this years Syntax.
The old thread is pretty much useless to anyone wanting to goto or talk about Syntax.
It's now nearly 2 months till Syntax, I'd really like to see some more updates to the website, venue confirmation, and some drumming up interest around different avenues.
As far as I can tell it's not on demoparty.net and there's been no invite released.
As much as I hate social networking sites, I followed the progress before and during evoke 2010 via their twitter feed and that was really useful, especially knowing when I should stop everything and tune in. I wasn't actually following it as I don't have a twitter account, but visited the feed heaps.
I guess I just want to see a bit more activity leading upto 2010 as it's not much time left to attract interest from new blood.
Really looking forward to it, and trying to pull my finger out and get some progress on some entries :)
Cheers,
Spoony[Post edited by spoony on Saturday 4 September 2010 - 3:18] | | |
| Hey Spoony,
Yes we will support you on this!!
Different avenues would be great to tap into..
As for attracting new blood:
once we have fixed dates and website updated im happy to push this with the advertisements in the 3d art colleges and 3d sites alike to see if we can capture some attention.
Lan party nerds and newbies there are always people interested in scene like activities, so an email promoting this on their websites.. Assembly party and the gathering party always promote this way.. the next scene awards have now moved to norway to the gathering to attract thousands of newbies to bring interest and focus to the scene.
The facebook sceners page could do with a make over and possibly changing it to Australian demo sceners or creating a new one as this works well with SEO for google searches and ex sceners hunting down sceners and see if we still exist.
Some guy made a OZdemoscene portal but there hasnt been any activity since it went live.
As far as DEFAME is concerned we are looking for new members and we are pushing for the Syntax deadline to release something.. fingers crossed. Voltage and i are working on a production.
We have plans for a sydney party in June next year.
Its really upto the organisers of Syntax to start disscussing a party invite and update the website..
so guys if you think you can contribute for Syntax with additional ideas or services im sure we would all love to hear about it.
cheers

| Finding a venue has been the trickiest part as we don't know numbers as yet. There is also a certain point where the infrastructure required to run an event suddenly gets a whole load more complex. (security, safety, etc). But doing our best to find a place about double the size and with a bar and good power :-)
The rest will come together once the venue is organised.
There hasn't been any communication because the organizers are all having very busy lives outside the scene at the moment (eg. marriage, job changes, travels) This is all in the process of settling down so we'll hopefully be on the job again next week and keep you all posted. Thanks.
Reload - do you want to take over the Facebook sceners page and setup a Syntax page? | | |
| Just an update that I'm taking a few days off work in a week from now to find a venue for Syntax and consult with the other crew about logistics, etc. So far we have the Party vote server being configured, a sound system ready, all the machines set to go, security at the door (new requirement) and an approximate schedule that might change when the venue is booked.
There is no official party invite prod at this time unless someone can knock something together for us :-) | | |
| I'm hoping that the dates are already fixed :). I've already booked my flight and leave.
Getting cheap tickets for a weekend can be a bitch if you leave it too close to the event..
Good luck with the venue hunt, and thanks for the hard work :) | | |

Well, I'm currently digging through a 11 page thread on pouet full of drama about that. So far, Scamp (of Breakpoint organising and possibly the rumoured Breakpoint replacement) has accused scene.org of doing it for the money, and claims to have seen a bid from The Gathering for a large unspecified sum. So, um, there may have been other motives for that. :P[Post edited by main on Monday 6 September 2010 - 15:04] | | |
| Hmm, but this year was the last breakpoint? Did which was decided first? the scene awards move? or the final breakpoint?.
I just assumed it was moved because this year was the final breakpoint. | | |
| Ah I'm reading through it now too and things are making a bit more sense.
I think if they do do the scene awards there next year, they should rotate it back to whatever event replaces BP. | | |
| | We'll be sending out an email at the end of the week to those that have registered with an update | | |
| I created a facebook event for Syntax and posted the details on the Aussie Sceners page.
I also added an event on demoparty.net, which feeds into Pouet. http://www.demoparty.net/syntax-2010/
While I was at it, I googled Australian Demoscene sites and posted links, info or sent emails where appropriate.
Time to get cracking on our demo, time is short.
See yall at Syntax. \o/ | | |
| I finally got 'round to registering, and was a little bemused by the following message.
Details submitted!!
You can check if you are on the list by looking at the list of people coming to Syntax 2008.
If anyone needs a lift back to '08, I'm sure I can find some room in my Police Box.
@cTrix. Sorry I have not been in touch, I have been busy working like a dog (well, technicaly more like an ant. But that just isn't as poetic).
Here's hoping that I can find some time/energy to actually enter some of the competitions.[Post edited by anakirob on Wednesday 22 September 2010 - 11:31] | | |
| @ anakiRob: No worries matie. Ript filled me in that you've been flat out. (it seems we all are!)
@Everyone: UPDATE
So here is the big venue problem: a venue with an alcohol licence, as part of their licence agreement HAS to mop up and clean up after a night of serving alcohol. So all night party place is a no go. But as far as a venue: we've found something that looks promising that we can have the compos running until 2am or so. Unfortunatly coming back the next day to packdown is a no go because of cleanup; but we should be able to tidy gear to one side until the next day, etc.
Cost wise: minimum bar spend seems to be the order of the day. 15 people have reg'ed atm and tradition says this will double and a half; so we are assuming 35-50 people. Minimum bar spend at one venue was $3000, and it was $3500 at another place to have it for so long. That's an average of a beer an hour over 13 hours. We can do that right?!
The scedule would be something like:
1pm - 10pm : Time to work on prods and a place to hang out and drink at.
9pm : Everything but demos due in
10pm : All prods Due in
11pm - 1am : Compos
1am - 2:30am : Drinking & social time
2:35am Bust a move home / out
------------
SUNDAY:
12:30pm - EITHER go back to the same venue (which might not be possible) or go to another venue - maybe the Caffe or similar like we used last time and grab a mega lunch.
2pm - Prize Presentations and hang out time.
4pm - We might be able to store peoples equipment overnight and you could pick it up at the original venue the next day. Considering the $$$$ worth of Alcohol, DJ and AV gear at some of these places, it should be safe to leave.
What do people think?
The main thing is there is no vote pressure so you can vote until the next day including you are sober. Unfortunatly we havn't found a "party hall" like the Euro parties. Too much red tape.
Thanks for hangin' in there folks![Post edited by cTrix on Friday 24 September 2010 - 13:05] | | |
| | It seems the Syntax site is down at the moment along with the mail. We've got everyones reg details as it backs up daily so no real issue. Interesting circumstances though (anyone else get the russian 404 page?!) Seems that the hosting company is down for the moment too - should be back up soon. | Appears that Syntax site is back up but a couple of Australian ISP's have been IP blocked or something including my ISP. It's all wearing a little thin to be honest but Syntax will go ahead.
Another venue just fell though as they were being slow in finalizing details and decided having it start before 6pm was too hard for their security and didn't fall into their licence. Will keep you posted but it could well be a similar set up to last year.
ps. For 2011 we are going to book this sh*t 8 months in advance. Probably get outside of the city too and try to find a place like they had at X.[Post edited by cTrix on Monday 11 October 2010 - 4:49] | | |
| Hey guys,
Just checking in.. Defame guys are currently working away on a production...
A suggestion guys... how is every ones thoughts on moving the date till december sometime?
More time for a proper venue and more time for people to work on prods?
I understand people may have made arrangements for the current dates but i imagine things are still un organised with everyone involved and its only a few weeks away.
just us sydney guys thoughts at the moment!!
We could sure settle for more time but i respect those who are set on novembers dates.
Reload | | |
| One way or another I'll be in melbourne on those dates as I booked my plane tickets early to save money.
I also organised the amount of time I'd be there for around it being a two day event.
If the date changes I won't be able to make it, can't afford to fly twice to melbourne.
If you're going to consider anything like that I'd post a message to all that have registered. | | |
| We are still go for weekend of Nov 14th. Third venue just fell though (gaiaSword let me know last night) - if all else fails we'll just be in a park or warehouse space somewhere. The crew are having a meeting about it tonight to try and lock something in ASAP. You'd think a party hall request aka. "we just need a space for 30 hours" would be a simple task! We have all the infrastructure (projectors, sound, etc) to make it happen anywhere and it's way less risky for a venue than your average 21st or 18th. It's been a f**king joke trying to secure a place!!
I'm with Spoony. Changing the date is no option. | | |
| Huuurrraaarrrr!!
It looks like Syntax has a venue! Until it's booked and a contract is signed / booking confirmed I can't say anything - but it's looking good. Although it is a little 60's. And grandma-ish. But it has ample power, tables, it is in the CBD, accessible via public transport and available for Sat AND Sun with minimal restrictions (apart from keeping the PA down after midnight for surrounding residents.) | | |
| | Good to hear you have a venue. can you please check the syntax email account? | | |
| Us Sydney Lads may go for a road trip, if anyone is interested in a lift please let us know.. we have 7 seats.
Reload | | |
| Those of you who got the mailout on Monday will know that the date and schedule have been set.
Those of you who haven't should probably complete the registration form | | |
| | Update email coming to you all sooooon. Far to much to fit here! | | |
| | sh******t! Where did all the last minute sign ups come from? We are officially at capacity! | | |
