| | So, what's the story? Is it going to happen again this year? | | |
| Yep, it's all happening. Invitation demo coming real soon.
Tentative date (as per website) is October 31st. Bring your pumpkins. And javascript ;)
| I just bought a ZX Spectrum and a C64, so I might be coming with something quite different from my JS efforts of last year. ;-)
Although TBH I would prefer it wasn't on Halloween because there'll certainly be other things on that evening that I might have to go to (and thus not be able to make it down to Melbourne for Syntax).[Post edited by nf on Wednesday 22 July 2009 - 7:19]
| That's why we are telling people now! We had to decide on a date so we picked 31st Oct because it was available for the original venue we were going to use. Also because an international visitor had indicated it was a weekend they could make it - so hey - looks like we could be throwing a halloween demoparty here! Could make for a few interesting enteries ;-)
As ript says, invite coming soon. Keep your eyes peeled at Evoke demoparty happening first wkend of Aug...
Nice work on the ZX / C64 nf. :0]
| | Epic tune for Syntax invite I've just finished mixing in London. The invite will be released in a matter of days at Evoke demoparty ;-) | | |
| I don't remember it as replaced as such, but doing it more beachparty stylee - ie. we allow ascii/ansi so we get more of a compo this time around. Feel free to argue, though ;)
Also, invite released ... thumb it down here: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=53583
It's supposed to be pouet, I just don't understand.
| | Pumkins are alright. Great in a roast. We might have to add Pumkin Pizza on the menu at the venue! | | |
| To be honest, I hadn't noticed that little rule there.
Seems like it needs some discussion.
There's nothing in there to say that it's limited to 1k, the limit seems to be 1meg.
What platform is the synth you're thinking of running on?
If I put my mind to it, I'm sure I could cram some mp3 loops in a 1 meg PC executable. If they're laid out by the code, it's technically concatenative synthesis.
It's hard to know what's fair, really.
Chiptunes traditionally are code, so it's probably the closest in some ways. But the sizelimit is quite large to be allowing PC code in with the actual chiptunes - it's not hard to fit a small 16 channel xm and a replayer in 64k with a few demo effects... I've done it a few times ;)
I've not seen the Jester Interactive stuff. I'll look it up.
| The more I think about it ... DISLAIMER: Please note that these are just _ideas_ and not actual changes to the rules ;)
Maybe we need a separate sizelimit for executable synth stuff.
Maybe if it fits in 2 or 3k, it could go into the chip compo. I don't know what the average hardcore SID/AY/YM/etc person would think of that, though.
And at the other end, maybe if it fits in 32k, it could go in the tracker compo. I wouldn't know what the average tracker person's opinion would be about that, either... 64k intro synths are pretty powerful these days, but would easily fit the limit.
Basically, any larger .exes would be out.
There's a Syntax meeting soon, I believe. I'll bring it up.
| | ript, we'll discuss it at the meeting. | | |
| Sticking to the standard IT/S3M/XM and MOD/OCT formats would be the best option for now. They are the open and distributable formats the demoscene has adopted, are stand-alone files and have free re-players for all operating systems.
You could certainly use Jester to create music for a demo as there is no restriction to the software or formats you can use. While it would be great to have an open music compo for all other programs we don't have enough time at Syntax just yet. Could be an idea for 2010 :-)
| G'day All,
I'm a Sydney based human and I'll be travelling to Melbourne for my first demo party. My wife doesn't get it at all.... "I'm surrounded by nerds". :) But I'm quietly a little bit excited.
I've started a c64 entry using cross development tools, but I no longer own a real c64. I see that the demos will be played back on a c64.
Any adVice on getting my demo from PC to c64?
| Hiya!
Always good to hear there'll be more interstaters and more c64 demos ;)
Don't worry about not having a real disk - just bring your entry to the party as a .PRG or a .D64 file.
I have an ancient X1541 cable around that does the job, and will be bringing it with me.
A Life In Hell probably has multiple solutions up his sleeve too, one of which is bound to be there on the day.
Anyone that looks like an organiser should be able to point you in our direction(s) ;)
| Nice one ript. Thanks for that.
I'll buy one million* beer for the first person to convert the demo.
I'll see you there!
* Legal disclaimer: million may be exaggerated.
| You'll have time to drink one million beer by the time ripts x1541 cable writes that floppy!!
I can do Amiga ADF files to 3.5 for A500 and A1200 in case anyone needs it. Demos, MOD files, etc.
| I'll have an MMC Replay with me. So lots of solutions.
Booked the hotel today... flights tonight...
Bring it on!

| Awesome, thanks guys.
I've got myself a place to stay while I'm south of the border.... just need to book the flights also.
Looking forward to meeting you all.
| this will go down as an epic revival of the scene for australia, if not.. knees will be broken.
BBJ: we need to add to our pool ball collection :)
Voltage: I'm coming from Sydneytown also, would like to chat to you as you're a 64'er also?
| | yep, more stolen pool balls needed! that or we can pool our balls ;) | | |
| | okay, if we pool our balls.. you better get some listerine, there is only one place mine are going :) | | |
| Hey FADE..
TSR party 93.. good to see the old c64 SCENERS around.. its megazzap of TSR
Im thinking of coming to the Syntax party from sydney.. contact me on reload77au@hotmail.com[Post edited by reload on Tuesday 27 October 2009 - 13:48]
| | Syntax... fuck yeah... coming again to save the motherfucking day yeah | | |
| I think the idea for the venue is what has really lifted it. Great party location rather than some hall somewhere.
Took Thursday & Friday off work to start work on a demo. Taking Monday off too.
Glad I spent some time last year relearning my c64. Even have some code I wrote in kick assembler I can re-use.
| The hardest part is wanting to do something great.
Looking at ALIH's demos, theres no way I'm going to match his work.
Still got someting cool planned.
| alih definately has the interlace crown. if you need gfx, let me know.
P.S. Is voltage, old tdu member?[Post edited by fade on Saturday 5 September 2009 - 11:39]
| Yeah briefly. I never released anything with them.... or anyone else...
But before I die I will release a c64 demo.
| | Was wondering, can a piece of music be entered in the music category if its already used in a demo? | | |
| I guess it depends if the demo has already been released or will have been released before Syntax. Basically, anything already released isn't allowed.
If you're just referring to a demo that's going to be released at Syntax as well, I reckon that's fine.
Especially since the music compos will be scheduled before the demo compos, so no-one will have heard the tune beforehand.
| Good as I may need to request one of the tracker guys to do some music for me. I have a guy here trying to do something for me but he's done amiga stuff in the past and I'm not sure he'll get something done in time.
Any requests from me will be when I'm sure my demo will work as expected.
| That's fair enough.
Moments before you posted, I was actually going to add a caveat that common sense will have to prevail on the day.
ie. What would be the point of the music compo if it's identical to the demo compo minus the visuals? =)
Not going to happen, but *could*...
| What a waste the last few days have been, off sick from work and too sick to code my c64.
What I'm working on is taking a lot of short cuts for performance so you want to make sure they will look ok.
| Doh, that sucks.
If it makes you feel any better: I spent two long coding sessions debugging a broken bresenham routine, and in the end all I had to do was change a blt to a ble ... argh.
| Good how all the stress disappears when you get it going though.
I dont get paid if I'm not at work so would like to have some benefit for been stuck at home.
Guess resting my foot (injured doing girly group fitness classes) is all I can take away from it.
Listening to www.radio6581.com is good though.
| Dirty? Bresenham is just about the only algorithm for lines!
It's actually pretty good for accuracy.
And yep, in 68k. | | |
| | I meant reading wikipedia. | | |
| | Doh, now I look like a dick =D | | |
| I appear as I always do, king of the australian scene, loved by all and better than anakirob :)
PEACE OUT HOUSEANIMALS! YO!
| So I've spent all day in my public service job writing a ray tracing algo relating to something I'm doing for Syntax... Is that a bad sign?
Another thing. During a romantic moment with my lovely wife recently she decided to offer me some pleasure if you know what I mean. Was it a bad sign that I was singing... "goin, goin down. Going down to Syntax Party. goin goin down"
I think I need some help.
| Sounds to me like you've got your priorities right.
I've been off work since Thursday last week. Unfortunately came down sick Monday and haven't been able to code since. What a waste!
| Too sick to code! Damn you must be sick.
Get well mate, and code up a furious storm.
| Been doing a lot of reading instead, the 'new' vic gpx modes take a lot of understanding.
Got a basic FLI 4x1 plasma going but dont understand how to get it to be 4x4. 4x1 gives too small an area. Will get there.
At this stage I don't plan to use the plasma or the new modes, save them for another day.
Looking back, this is seriously a red-herring
PLASMA and more!!!![Post edited by Conjuror on Tuesday 13 October 2009 - 10:33]
| Well, it's 3:20am on a Friday night / sat morn and I for fitted going to a gig for working on my tracked entry. Third night in a row now.
Haven't even though about chip tune yet.
Good to know you've got Syntax on your mind Voltage ;-] Looks like the tune may have actually worked after all...
| Was that your tune cTrix?
Love it. :) | | |
| | Yeah, the Syntax party tune was my lil beer inspired effort two days before I headed to Europe for Evoke. I was singing harmonies at 4am the day I left and took a taxi straight to the airport!! Fun times. | | |
| Yep. There is no handicap. If it's 4kb and rocks then people will vote accordingly. All those details will be on the beamer before each piece.
Party PC is a Quadcore Q9550 at 2.9Ghz with 3GB RAM (funny, it used to have 4gb... hm) GFX card is a GeForce 9800 GTX+ Which is a year old but still ok. If you need better support or Vista then BYO. Just please let ript or cTrix know in advance so we can get your machine set up well in advance.
| | If anything, given the voting habits of the syntax audience, 4k's are at an advantage :) | | |
