Topic:  Melbourne Demoparty - Happening 2007
* Posted by cTrix Thursday 22 June 2006 - 22:18
G'day Aussie sceners!
(and our NZ friends)

This is the announcement some of you have been waiting for for a while. (Including myself) There will be a demo party - in Melbourne - and it's going to happen in 2007! So get your prod’s into planning stage :-)

VISIT: www.syntaxparty.org

When?
TBC. Probably early / mid July. (Dependant on feedback)

Where?
Melbourne, Australia. We will make sure that it is a venue that can be decked out well. It could happen at Federation Square given the right spin – but more than likely happen at one of the Universities – either RMIT or Swinburne. As long as we are all in the same room with enough power, a big F.O. coffee machine and a ripping projector & sound system – I’m sure everyone will feel at home.

Why?
Because gaiaSword & I been tracking and watching demos since 1992 (for me) and we keep meeting people who are curious about the scene when we explain it to them. We’ve got contacts, time and the flare to organize it and will probably find others who are willing to give us a hand.

Organization?
Well, at the moment, myself and gaiaSword are about to fly over to Finland and check out Assembly ‘06, then fly down to Germany for Evoke and hopefully get to catch up with some of the organizers. We will set up a website when we return from the trip and start planning in September ’06. (edit 2007: it's up!)

Categories?
This will be a pure demo party and the emphasis is on real-time!! Full Demo (under 15MB), Intro (under 64k), Wild Realtime Demo (flash, DHTML, Java, etc) & Tracked Music. They will be the basic compos at this point. If there are enough Amiga guys interested, we may create an Amiga demo category, but it will more than likly be combined at this point.

Will there be Prizes?
Yes! (something silly anyway) However, I think most of us are more about the party, rather than the prizes. It's more about getting your production on the bigscreen and everyone totally appreciating what it takes to pump out even the most simple of demos.

Can I help?
Yes! We will organize a pre-party session Fwb 07 to discuss the event details, event name, equipment, websites, sponsorship ideas, organizing, etc.

The biggest thing you can do – which we’d be eternally grateful for – is put the word out to anyone you know who is involved in the demoscene or wants to get into it :-D Gwt aomw buzz happening. And also let us know what time of year best suits you. Hope to hear from you all. Stay tuned to this forum in the coming months!

Cheers
cTrix

I'm so going to this :D

Possibly run the event with one of the other computer/interactive entertainment/game conference events that tend to get held at Fed Square.

I havent heard any word about Freeplay for 2006 yet, so hopefully there will be something for 2007. Otherwise possibly a general LAN could be held, with DemoScene being shown on a big screen? Bundoora Campus seems to be pretty good for that, the same place Shafted Lan is held.

I'd love to attend this :) Been following the scene since about '02 and would love to attend. Union hall @ La Trobe bundoora campus is a great place to hold it (like ChiggenWingz mentioned - place where ShaftedLAN held their events).

Damn you're lucky to be able to fly over to Assembly. Myself and a mate have often talked about going but it's a huge way to go.

Fed square would be a fkn insane place to hold it. Would be way better than having to go all the way out to bundoora.

Keep us updated :)

Thanks for your ideas guys! (keep 'em rolling in peoples)

We are in Denmark at the moment, just chilling out because Scene Event got canned this year. Off to Assembly next week, where we are hooking up with a few of the organisers and checkout AV gear & the logistics of how they run the party - although I don't think we'll be getting 4000 ppl to our first party! (100 maybe?!)

As you say DeNs, it is a fair way to travel, and slightly expensive, but you do get to experience Scandinavia at the same time, which is a beautiful place and full of incredible places to see, most of which are free. These guys were born to code demos - we saw an art peice yesterday from 1600's which was a Polar Coordinates painting. A cylindrical mirror in the middle allows you to see the unwrapped image. A Polar Coordinates opperation 400 year old!!! We are going back to the museum today (free entry) to secretly shoot some video of it. It is that awesome! :-)

This is so awesome, I will be there for sure :D

btw, I think you should make it July, so there is more time to prepare prods and get new teams together. And if it's in January I won't be able to make it :p

Almost certainly will be in July; in any case July makes a lot of sense as we still have lots of back-end work to do beforehand as well (nearly as much work as making a prod!).
Typing live from assembly06 at the moment... which appears a party of extremes. A lot of chilled kids and quite a percentage going the hack...
erm, I think the point is that making demos aint easy... so the more time you have on your stuff, the better. There won't be any limitations on multiple entries; so get cracking - and maybe even launch something at Nullabor if you're keen :)

ah! i've been waiting for something like this for YEARS :D :D

I'm sooo there :)

Sounds awesowe, I would defintly be interested in helping. Also, agreed, July would be the best time.

Cheers Jasp.

We'll get a party portal open in the next couple of months. Keep in touch.

Demo party Website is aimed to be launced by Xmas. (currently being drafted) Venue almost confirmed: given parking, easy access, power requirements, it is looking to be one of the Universities close to the city :-) Party will be July 2007 in Melbourne. A "Who's coming" will be on the site for you to sign up and communicate with potential party goers. Full info on transport etc will be there too. Just get your arse to Melbourne and we'll organise the rest!

Either way, start thinkin' about your prods now. At minimum there will be compos for full demo (under 20MB), 64k demo (open platform), browser / flash demo, tracked music (under 2MB) and oldskool music (SID, PC speaker, Adlib, etc). Once we have the basic site (version 1) up, anyone who wants to help us will be able to contact us. The support so far has been much appreciated!

Getting there on the website front. HTML/CSS is the bane of my existance atm (It would be much easier to put all the details in one big scroller intro!) So soz on the delay there. It will be up for Xmas by any rate.

Behind the scenes it looks like we are getting some support venue wise, and sound system is looking good (4 x RCF 12" bins and 800watt Mackie Sub) Still working on getting Internet access - but we've got 7 months or so to work on that. Date is looking to be start or mid July 2007. After talking to some of our friends in Europe, we've decided to keep the categories to a minimum - main focus is still realtime demos :-)

good luck with it in Melbourne.
We in Perth will try to impress you guys with Nullarbor 2007.. should be good.. :).
we are planning heaps of prods as well for nullarbor..

Ace! We'll see you at Nullarbor with a bit of luck :-) Not sure what we'll bring prod wise. Our 3D engine is still v. sketchy at the moment coz our coder is madly finishing his phD. We'll get something in though!

Quick update. Domain for the party nfo site is registered, hosting is organised, etc, so a site will be launched soon with compo details, etc. Party place TBC but we have a fair idea of where it will be. Internet access is prooving to be the hardest part, but we'll get some suggestions once the site is up. Stay tuned! :-D

Good luck with it, for sure!

Never been to a party in my own city before ;)

If you're having trouble with the website, I could write some code for you. I'm just getting into the demoscene, and have been very disappointed to find nothing - no groups and no parties, in New Zealand. I can't do JS or SQL, but I know XHTML/CSS and PHP, and I've got some spare time over the summer holidays. BTW, you can do mouseovers like the ones on your site with no javascript + no hacks, takes far less code.

If I can get money for a flight to Aussie, I'll definitely come to the party.

* Posted by Gaia Saturday 6 January 2007 - 10:05
g'day everyone, thanks for the thoughts!

Just letting you know that we've now got the site launched, as well as (finally) a name for this mysterious event:

Syntax 2007
http://www.syntaxparty.org

sinikk: great to hear from you! I can totally understand being troubled by inactivities in NZ. If you're interested, we might well need some help in terms of code (maybe for the partynet amongst other things); we'll keep you posted. Good luck if you can afford the big trip! If there's anything we can do, let us know.

rest of you: start getting your prods ready! (ps And don't forget about upcoming Nullarbor if you're feeling westward-bound)

Flights to Melbourne and back are more expensive than I expected, but I could get the money, and I definitely want to come.

Also, what the heck is a partynet?

Sounds like fun.
(currently in Auckland)

* Posted by cTrix Saturday 13 January 2007 - 17:35
A partynet is a local portal available at the party which has vital information about the party, any released prods, a voting system (although we are tempted to be oldskool and use votecards!) and maybe a one-liner system amoungst other things.

Something you could help us with that would kick-arse would be if you could build us a little database for the website that allows people to enter their handle and add themselves to a "who's coming" section. I've done the planning documentation, just need someone to build the forms and get it online. If you are up for this, give us an email to the address which is on the site. (the info one :-) )

BTW: If you can make it to Melb, we can organise picking you up from the Airport and accomodation, etc. If anyone else needs help on that front, we'll see what we can do too.

FunnyMan: Auckland hey? I'll be there in May! Hopefully it won't be too cold...

good luck guys... I reckon I can find an excuse to come down to melb in July :) Be good to see some of the other old-timers there too :)

not sure how useful this is.. but I still technically run scene-l a majordomo mailing list..

http://www.blerk.org/scene-l.php

sign yerself up there.. it'll send a confirmation email before you're actually signed up.

alternatively you can just email majordomo at blerk.org directly and put:

subscribe scene-l

in the body of the email. (unsubscribe scene-l to remove yourself)

cheers,
mz

This is awesome - i'll definitely be there. However I won't be able to provide a demo (no skills...). Just love the scene ;)

Hadn't checked this since my last post. Awesome that you guys are fighting to bring back the scene here in aus.
