shapeshifter
a demo by excess
released at scene event 2002, july 2002

___________________________________________________ demo

this is another quick party production from us -- the
initial work was done in a few hours at solskogen 2002,
(a kickass party, we might add :) while the rest was
mainly done at the party. we ought to start working
earlier on our demos soon. :-)

fortunately, scene event _does_ have internet connection
this year, although it's extremely slow. pushing files
back and forth at 0.1kB/sec isn't that fun when you've
got a deadline, the designer's PC has crashed, you
suddenly get weird sync problems and the coder back
home soon has to leave anyhow. :-) things are a bit
easier when everybody are at the same place, but as
long as the coder is in norway and everybody else are
in denmark at the party, you don't have such luxuries
as unlimited file transfer or stable IRC connections.
;-)

...and spending eight hours looking for the same bug
when it's a matter of fixing a single byte in the
demoscript sucks. :-) (red.anm: hei! jeg var *trøtt*!
-bent)

remixes by amongst others, gloom of excess (shameless
plug :).

as usual, not too evil on the demands -- needs a
relatively fast pc (800mhz or so should do, 128mb ram
should work but more would be nice) and a 3d card with
opengl. we've only tested this exact production on gf2mx
cards and on parhelia (16xfaa rules ;-) ), but we
haven't added anything that should ruin radeon (or other
cards') compatibility to our demolib since our last
release. (note: next excess demo probably won't run on
voodoo1 etc. anymore, we're very likely to drop
"legacy"-compatibility to make cooler stuff.
technological breakthroughs happen every day, you
know ;-) )

run. it shouldn't be that hard. ;-) (linux users:
remember chmod +x first, of course.) if you need more
manual tuning or if you don't like fancy dialogs, you
could try running it with -help.

_________________________________ the usual running help

most drivers don't expose stencil visuals if you're in
16bpp mode. try changing to 24/32bpp if you get errors.
(linux users: you have to change your _X desktop_ to
24/32bpp)

___________________ a message to the few lamers at se2k2

okay, you were few and far between.. but.. to the people
sitting to the right of us, playing counterstrike and
playing the first 20 seconds of four songs repetitively
during almost 3 days... BURN IN HELL! WHAT THE FUCK ARE
YOU EVEN DOING HERE? THIS IS A *DEMOPARTY*! didn't the
"d is for demo"-subtitle ring a bell? fuck off and don't
ever return!

..so there. :)

_________________________________________ special thanks

matrox, for being so speedy about trying to resolve the
render-to-texture issues we were reporting (no,
shapeshifter doesn't use render-to-texture, but our next
demo probably will).

ati, for being even speedier, and for even sending us a
radeon8500 to test stuff on (although we didn't receive
it in time for shapeshifter testing). you rock. :-)

also special thanks to carlsberg beer. you people
make life worth living! :)
